MICHELANGELO'S DAVID: 8 Degrees of Separation

CAN WE GET FROM HERE...

...TO HERE?

Intimissimi, Florence (the current Via dei Calzaiuoli shop in the center of town, not my former neighborhood shop in Via Gioberti).

LET'S START COUNTING!

Sighted in the aptly named Piazzale Michelangiolo but such treasures of Davidiana are available more or less everywhere, in Florence and around the world. (Photo Lyle Goldberg)

1501-4: Michelangelo sculpts a monumental marble David to surmount a buttress at Florence Cathedral: 1

1504: The David is placed, instead, in front of Palazzo Vecchio: 2

1873: The original David is transferred to the Accademia Gallery: 3

Also in 1873: A marble replica is placed in front of the Palazzo Vecchio: 4

(For steps 1 through 4, you can find a fuller chronology with Illustrations here.)

Circa 1960: Piazza della Signoria (with the replica of Michelangelo's David) is documented by a photographer: 5

1980s: The resulting photograph is enlarged, transferred to easy-care formica and featured on a traditional Florentine Tripe Stand: 6

2010: Another eagle-eyed photographer captures our Tripe Stand David in full context: 7

2011: Yours, online: 8

2026: Yours, refreshed...but we won't count that one.

NOTE TO SELF:

I need to do some posts on Florentine Tripe Stands... Over the years, I have eaten an obscene quantity of trippa, lampredotto, budellina and the like —and I have the photos to prove it.

In the meantime, here is a big-picture shot of Marco Bolognesi's location (as it was in Via Gioberti, after Intimissimi decamped but before Marco shifted a couple of dozen meters to nearby Piazza Beccaria).

In fact, we got in and grabbed the Intimissimi image when the getting was good. Soon after, it was replaced by the less photogenic Easy Market franchise. Meanwhile, Marco Bolognesi added the droopy if folkloric red awning. (Photo Lyle Goldberg)
